Pallet Handling and Storage Basics
Everyday habits for handling and storing wood pallets, from inspection to stacking and fire safety.
Inspect Before You Load
Look for cracked boards, split stringers or blocks, and protruding nails. Pull damaged pallets out of use and set them aside for repair or recycling.
Load Evenly
Spread weight across the deck and keep the load within the pallet’s edges, because overhang can crush packaging and make a load less stable.
Handle With Care
Set forks to the right width and enter squarely. Most damage comes from fork impacts and from dropping or dragging pallets.
Store Empty Pallets Sensibly
Keep stacks flat, stable and at a sensible height. Store pallets dry where you can, since damp wood can grow mould and weaken over time.
Empty wood pallets burn readily, so keep them away from ignition sources and buildings where possible. Check current fire regulations and your insurer’s requirements for storage limits.
