ISPM 15 Basics for Heat-Treated Pallets
A short introduction to ISPM 15, the international standard for wood packaging used in export shipments.
What ISPM 15 Is
ISPM 15 is the international standard for wood packaging material, including pallets, that moves between countries. It aims to reduce the spread of pests in raw wood.
What Heat Treatment Means
Under the standard, heat treatment raises the core of the wood to at least 56 °C for at least 30 minutes. Treated wood packaging carries an approved mark that identifies the treatment and the producer.
Checking a Pallet
Look for the mark on the pallet before you ship. A pallet without it, or with a damaged or unreadable mark, can cause problems at a border.
Repaired pallets need extra care, because replacement boards also have to meet the standard. Ask the supplier how repaired pallets are handled.
Before You Export
Requirements vary by destination and can change. Check current regulations for the destination country, and confirm with your freight forwarder before you ship.
